Friday 5th August – evening hike **** sunny – Bromswell Green (nature reserve)
Mag and I have both been busy working and feeling a bit low after losing our lovely cat Holly I decided it was time to have a night in our VW campervan to cheer us up! I have been working in the little village of Bromswell near Woodbridge and have been on some lovely walks around this beautiful village and was keen to show Mags:) We finish a little earlier on Friday so texted Mag to suggest a night away. We only need an evening meal, breakfast and a picnic plus our bedding so it’s easy to get ready quickly :) I was home at 3ish and we were on the road by 4 heading for the tiny car park at Bromswell Green, a small nature reverse near the River Deben with nice views and quiet too!
There was one car there when we arrived but they soon left so we got a top spot and had a cuppa enjoying the sunshine. The evening started really well when I set up the camera on the tripod for our usual selfie, having 10 seconds to get back to Mag I ran straight into a wooden post hidden in the grass, taking loads of skin off my knee:( Loads of blood but after a bandage applied by Mag it was time to limp off on a short walk around the Suffolk Wildlife Trust reserve where we found some top curly horned black sheep and some vicious stinging nettles!!! We then walked to Bromswell church before returning to the Deben where we frightened off a couple of Kingfishers plus Egrets, Oyster Catchers and redshanks. Back to the van in time for a nice sunset watching loads of Wagtails on the power cables and flocks of geese circling looking for a spot to spend the night. It was great to be back in the van, me playing cards and Mag reading and knitting. Rob rang from the Scottish Isles to tell us of his adventures:)

Saturday 6th August – Bike ***** sunny – Bromswell to Ufford to Melton to Woodbridge :) 13 miles covered – out over 5 hours !
Brilliant quiet night in the van, Mag said it rained but I didn’t hear it! There was not a cloud in the sky when we woke up and the field yellow with dandelions. We had a relaxing start reading then breakfast, I even managed my exercises while Mag made a picnic. At 11 we set off on our bikes, first to Bromswell village then out onto the busy Snape road for a short way until we reached the wooded path back past Bromswell Church. This lead to a newly grassed fields where the mess hut and store compound for the job I am working on is. This is where I have spent the last two weeks! I showed Mag a farm reservoir with resident Grebe and a Buzzard flying overhead. It was then down the narrow hill where our drainage job is to the t-junction where the footpath leads to Ufford Bridge, a route I have walked a couple of times. Mag was suitably impressed with the sandbag wall at the end of our job! The path continued through pretty plantations of cricket bat willow trees to a small bridge, then we had to cross the railway line leading to a large meadow skirted by the very narrow Deben and onto Ufford bridge - popular with local kids as a swimming spot. Then up past the old pub turning left down a very narrow lane to Melton Church, past the golf club and out onto the Melton/Woodbridge Road. We cycled right through the busy Woodbridge town centre with loads of quirky shops. Mag suggested we continue onto Martlesham Creek where the tide was low with loads of Godwits feeding in the mud. We stopped at our favourite Kyson point for our picnic and spotted a seal trying to eat a large fish it had caught :) It took it ages but we think it was playing with its dinner! We had a lovely chat with a couple from Mersea Island who rowed ashore from their yacht in search of provisions. Many dinghies were racing down the river from Woodbridge SC and it was great to see the coloured sails making the most of a nice breeze:)
With the tide now coming in fast, we set off before we were cut off along the river path to Woodbridge. We took care passing the walkers a,s cycling is sadly not allowed on this path. There was a small detour around river defence work with us having to cross the railway line twice, we even had to stop and wait for a train! A quick look at the Tide Mill (We didn’t go in with entry £5 per person) and then past the many marinas, boat yards and house boats to Wilford Bridge. After crossing the busy main road it was only a short way back to our van for a well-deserved cuppa and biscuit. We relaxed in the sun for an hour or so before packing up and heading home. We needed to go to Lidl for our weekly shop as we are off to Point Clear tomorrow for some windsurfing – forecast permitting!!!
Love being in the van a real pick me up – making us both feel a lot better – beautiful weather and even Ipswich Town won their opening match 4 – 2 !!! but no medals in the Rio Olympics yet, sadly disappointing bike road race – fingers crossed for some success soon :)
